Survey and

My original proposal was for one eighteen inch

diameter steel pipe line to be laid on the bed of the harbour

on a line running from the end of Jackson Road to the

intersection of the continuation of the line of Nathan Road

with the Railway Sea Wall. The estimated cost was $300,000.

I would point out that this estimated cost was

calculated with very little reliable information regarding

the Harbour Bed and was like the estimates given in my report

of 8. 4. 24, as accurate an estimate as could be given with

the information then available.

Examination

On being instructed to prepare the present report

of Proposed I immediately arranged for survey work to be commenced on Line.

the proposed line which runs from Queen's Pier on the Hong Kong side to the intersection of Nathan Road (continued) and

the Railway Sea Wall in Kowloon. This line differs only slightly from the original line chosen, the Hong Kong Terminal having been moved about two hundred and fifty feet West to Queen's Pier while the Kowloon Terminal has not been

altered. The Hong Kong Terminal has been moved to Queen's

Pier as that structure will form a suitable landing place

and will obviate the necessity of a special pier end-landing.

Shortly after commencement of the survey, owing to lack of staff the Port Development Department who had been dealing with the matter had to hand the work over to me for

completion by the Waterworks staff.

The proposed line for the pipes was first carefully

set out and measured and soundings were taken to enable a

profile of the harbour bed to be plotted.

An experienced European Diver carefully examined

the harbour bottom on the selected line, frequent notes being

made, while hand prickings with a small half inch diameter

pricking rod five feet six inches long were made every ten
